It's no secret that my absolute music hero is Oscar, Grammy, Emmy
& Golden Globe winner Randy Newman. The Little Criminals are a bunch
of erudite, wonderful, kind-hearted loonies who support Randy and, amongst other
things, have produced their own albums.; two of which I am proud to
be a part of. They are:

It's a double album of Randy covers - the last being a previously unreleased track by Randy himself, so a must of you're a fan. On it is my primitive version of 'God's Song':

The Little Criminals still go on and Randy thanked us all
on the sleevenotes of his last album (posh!). Randy and his manager,
the lovely Cathy Kerr, are very kind and sweet people. I didn't realise
when I recorded this that it's his favourite of his own songs so I was
absolutely drenching my 'Tenalady' catch-the dribbles-when-you-cough-pads
when I found out and knew he'd hear it. I hadn't been well enough to
sing for years at this time - a lot of the time I was too weak even to
speak (much to everyone's relief) and got someone to come to my home
and try out their new recording equipment. I was still too weak to sing
and play and sing all the way through and, no kidding, had to have a
long lie down between the verse and the chorus. The quality is poor
but it marks a point for me when I was returning to the land of the
living and the wonderful Little Criminals and music were so important
to my, albeit limited, resurrection. The producer, the indomitable
Susan McTigue, got Randy to sign copies of the album for each
of the contributers. He'd written on mine: "Haze - A truly great
job. Hope to see you again soon. You made me a believer. Love, Randy."
Now I know it's not cool to boast and he was hardly likely to write:
"Haze - that was a big pile of shit and I'm suing you," and
I will confess to other endorsements from big famousies from my gigging
days, but the Randy one is the only one that matters, ironically at
I time when I was broken and negated, and I confess I flaunt it...so
yah, boo sucks.
